Javanese Perspectives on Teachers

There are 2 phrases representing Javanese culture's view of the word "teacher". They are "Glugu Turu" and "digugu lan ditiru".

Glugu turu literally mean "sleeping log". Glugu is coconut log. Javanese use this to make a traditional bridge. They put the log crossing the river then people use it as a bridge to go to the other side of the river. According this term, teacher is someone who makes your dream possible and reachable. If you want to be doctor, teacher will guide and teach you how. If you want to be architect, teacher will guide and teach you how. And so on.

Digugu lan ditiru mean be followed and be imitated. This term is obviously simple to understand. Yup, teacher is someone who is considered "perfect and mastering-everything". According this term, teacher must be someone who has competence in teaching any subject he/she assigned to.

I hope this short note will help you to be a good teacher. And for students around the globe, hopefully you'll be more appreciated your teacher.
