Reading and writing are two skills which doesn't seem enjoyable. Also, many would see this as mere academic activities who are done by those who work as a teacher, lecturer and author, of course. I'm going to argue that both skills are more than occupational pre-requisite.
First, reading and writing can't be separated and understood as unrelated matters. Instead, in order to be a prolific and quality writer one must be a good reader. I propose that the act of reading doesn't only involved books and other printed object but also real life phenomena. As we become good observer, we are already a halfway to be an amazing writer.
Second, in respect 'to read' an actual event or situation, it doesn't undermine literal reading. Instead, those strands of "reading" are completing each other. Especially when we write an academic text, understanding what previous writer have achieved is essential. Even when ones study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), they must sufficiently address past achievement in their respected field.
Another aspect of writing which sometimes underrated is an ability of being imaginative person. We have seen enough people being a millionaire after publishing popular fiction books. Imagination is a feature that will make a piece of writing enjoyable and entertaining. Even for a dull and precise works in STEM, imagination makes the writing outstanding and strong in character.
Indeed, academia has more reasons to be effective in both reading an writing. Yet, every one who, at least once in his/her lifetime, come across to write, must explore their reading archive before able to produce high quality of writing.
That's what I'm thinking.
Peace.
By for now.
